Warner Bros Discovery is in talks to sell nearly half of its film and TV music publishing assets for approximately $500 million.
Although, it is not clear which assets have been chosen. According to several reports, it is possible that a major label, with Sony leading the way, may acquire the rights to nearly half of the catalogue with a price of around $500 million. The catalogue is rumoured to include music from iconic films, such as Sweeney Todd, Evita, Purple Rain, and some Batman movies. Popular soundtracks like “As Time Goes By” from Casablanca are also on the table.
Attorney Allen Grubman will reportedly oversee the deal for David Zaslav, Warner Bros Discovery CEO.
However, some experts are unsure about the deal, given that several company assets are over 50 years old and their value is declining. As a result, they are becoming difficult to exploit. The catalogue will reportedly comprise mostly movie themes and some traditional songs. It is possible that modern cinephiles may not be familiar with the items in the catalogue.
At present, the catalogue is subject to a multi-year administration deal with Universal Music Publishing. Warner Bros Discovery has not yet made an official announcement about this scenario.
This deal could immensely benefit Warner Bros Discovery. The company has been enduring several dilemmas, including hundreds of layoffs within its Turner and Discovery brands and the adverse impacts of the ongoing WGA strike. The significant proceeds generated from this deal could aid the company in paying off a huge debt of nearly $49.5 billion. Stay tuned for more updates.
