The Minecraft movie trailer is making quite the name for itself, but not for the reason Warner Bros. expected. The movie has been in development for a very long time. The audience is livid over what they received, and there happens to be enough reason to back it up. Raking over 1 million dislikes on the teaser.
Let’s turn a blind eye towards the lazy CGI and the deviation from the source material. There’s still a lot to unpack. Starting off with the premise. There is a difference between “tried and tested” and “straight up stale.” The movie falls into the latter. The same old “ordinary people fall into a different realm” plot makes the movie essentially the new Jumanji. Down to the character archetypes. The movie feels familiar to everything that we have already seen as an audience except Minecraft.
Back to the CGI, in defense of the studio, copying the Minecraft world one to one would have been a worse artistic choice. But the world doesn’t feel like Minecraft. It is indeed a delight to see the hyperrealism mixed with the cubical world of Minecraft. But then again, the live-action characters just don’t blend in with the surroundings. The backlit characters feel inorganic additions to an otherwise well rendered world.
The Minecraft community is massive, encompassing all age groups. Familiarity should have been the top priority. Is this another Sonic the Hedgehog in the making? Only time will tell. The movie sits on a release date of April 4, 2025.
