Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ and Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’ have not just been widely admired by audiences across the globe, but they have also created a big impact on the box office worldwide with a combined gross of over a whopping $1.1 billion so far. Together, the two films created an Internet phenomenon called ‘Barbenheimer’, which began circulating even before their concurrent theatrical release on 21st July. As a result, myriad tweets, memes, and ‘Barbenheimer’ posts soon became a rage online.
But the ‘Barbenheimer’ phenomenon has drawn the ire of Warner Bros. Japan (Warner Bros. is the distributor of ‘Barbie’ movie), considering the fact that Japan suffered massive losses and destruction when an atomic bomb was dropped for the first time in human history on Hiroshima on 6th August 1945.
Warner Bros. Japan has recently criticized through a statement in which it expressed its unhappiness about the Barbenheimer post which the official Twitter account of ‘Barbie’ movie has shared.
Warner Bros. Japan has stated through its Barbie Japan page that “We consider it extremely regrettable that the official account of the American headquarters for the movie ‘Barbie’ reacted to the social media postings of ‘Barbenheimer’ fans. We take this situation very seriously. We are asking the U.S. headquarters to take appropriate action. We apologize to those who were offended by this series of inconsiderate reactions. Warner Bros Japan.”
The ‘Barbenheimer’ phenomenon has attracted widespread criticism in Japan to such an extent that a counteractive #NoBarbenheimer hashtag has started trending big time in the country. As of now, ‘Oppenheimer’ has still got no release date yet in Japan and it looks unlikely that the film will even release in the country considering its extremely sensitive historical context.
