The final days of Warner Bros’ completed but unreleased ‘Coyote vs. Acme’ are near. According to The Wrap, the production house wants to shelve the Dave Green directional for good.
The controversy around ‘Coyote vs. Acme’ first emerged on November 9, 2023, when Warner Bros announced the cancellation of the film’s release. Its production finished a long time ago. Yet, no one knows why the studio lacks faith in the John Cena starrer. Apart from the former WWE champion, the movie had the likes of Will Forte and Lana Condor.
One of the rumoured reasons that led to the movie’s cancellation was the lack of faith of WBD’s executives in the project. Another reason that must have created this messy situation is the re-launching of Warner Bros. Pictures Animation in June last year, inspiring the production house to give theatrical releases to animated projects on a global level. The film was originally supposed to come out on the HBO Max streaming platform. In addition, Warner Bros preferred claiming $30 million in the form of tax loss for the film without even informing the crew.
The latest report from The Wrap also revealed that Warner Bros wanted to seek nearly $75-80 million for ‘Coyote vs. Acme’ but did not like the offers from Paramount, Amazon, and Netflix. In early January this year, the movie’s producer, Chris DeFaria, received a call from one of the studio’s executives, who said, “They want to close the books.” What makes this scenario more perplexing is that the film received strong positive reviews from initial screenings.
Four Warner Bros executives are being held responsible for burying ‘Coyote vs. Acme’ – David Zaslav (CEO and president of Warner Bros. Discovery), Bill Damaschke (president of Warner Bros. Pictures Animation), Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy (Co-Chairpersons and CEOs of Warner Bros.). As per The Wrap, Zaslav has not yet watched the film. Abdy and De Luca have watched the film’s director’s cut. And Damaschke watched the movie during the first audience preview.
It seems like Warner Bros wants to delete ‘Coyote vs. Acme’ for good. That’s all, folks! Stay tuned for more updates.
