Warner Bros’ strategy for Christmas seemed a bit odd from the very beginning, but nonetheless, it is looking really effective. When WB decided that they would completely utilize the holidays by releasing 3 movies in a span of 10 days, eyebrows were raised.
Wonka, though success was written all over it, overshadowed the expectations flawlessly and made the Box Office his own pet. Opening with a domestic $39M was definitely a victory, but it marched on. As of now, on the Global Market, Wonka also collected a whopping $250M and is being tough competition for Hunger Games.
Even on Christmas day, Wonka got the gift of $10.3M, which is indeed a big one, especially if it’s fighting with some really big titles.
Then comes DC’s Aquaman 2, far from returning to its past glory, the film, through stumbling, is indeed having a short and sweet Box Office run. The Box Office prediction showcased that it might reach the $40M threshold with the Christmas boost, and with $10.6M on Christmas day, it just did that.
But the biggest hit of Christmas is definitely The Color Purple as it had the second-biggest Christmas debut of all time, just following Sherlock Holmes’s debut featuring RDJ.
The Color Purple painted the Box Office with the colors of success, grossing $18.2M, and with more global attractions coming soon, you can expect a stable and big Box Office in the weeks to come.
It is indeed an amusing phenomenon for any studio to fight such a one-sided Christmas battle. Though on paper, the movies have to fight it out among themselves as well, the studio is the one that is getting richer.
