The Coen Brothers have served up some excellent films in the last three decades. Most of those films have received their share of acclaim and accolades amongst film buffs. ‘No Country For Old Men’, ‘The Big Lebowski’, ‘A Serious Man’, ‘Blood Simple’, ‘True Grit’, among others, have been watched and loved by film-goers the world over.
However, there’s one movie by the gifted Coen Brothers that is so criminally underrated, it’s not even funny. We’re talking of ‘Burn Without Reading’, directed by Ethan and Joel Coen. The movie is currently available to stream in India on Jio Cinema.
‘Burn Without Reading’ is a dark comedy and crime drama, starring Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Frances McDormand, John Malkovich, Tilda Swinton, among others. It released in theatres in 2008. When a disc containing memoirs of a former CIA analyst (John Malkovich) falls into the hands of Linda Litzke (Frances McDormand) and Chad Feldheimer (Brad Pitt), the two gym employees see a chance to make enough money for her to have life-changing cosmetic surgery. Predictably, events whirl out of control for the duo and for those in their orbit.
Though ‘Burn Without Reading’ is not everyone’s cup of tea, those who like watching an intelligent black comedy will love the film. Critics have described it as a clever comedy/thriller with an outlandish plot and memorable characters. Yet others say that ‘Burn After Reading’ is a masterful work of satire and among the most cunning films that the duo ever made together.
With such fulsome praise for ‘Burn Without Reading’, we think the most underrated film from the Coen Brothers definitely deserves a viewing this weekend. The superb cast is another alluring factor about the film.
