Satyajit Ray made many films for children but these films are not mere fairytales or detective stories. They convey a deep philosophy and are sometimes a necessary commentary on humanity. Two films by Ray that can be enjoyed by audiences from 8 to 80 years of age are listed below.
Shonar Kella (1974) – Zee5:
The detective Felu Mittir goes to Rajasthan with his cousin in search of a boy who goes missing. The boy could tell things about his past life and is mistaken to have ideas about hidden treasures. The beautifully shot film has many moments when you realize it is not just a regular kids’ movie. Shonar Kella represents culture and has comments on philosophy, history and many such things. The film stars actors like Soumitra Chatterjee, Santosh Dutta, Kamu Mukherjee and many others and is one of the best thrillers ever made in India. It Is a must watch and id you haven’t seen it yet, go for it.
Hirak Rajar Deshe (1980) – Amazon Prime Video:
The sequel to the much acclaimed ‘Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne’ is much more than a king and queen tale. It tells the story of Goopy and Bagha, two friends who have got the boon of mesmerizing anyone with their music and two more boons of eating anything they want and going anywhere in a moment. They marry the two princesses of a country and are now sent to the land of diamonds, a country that is ruled by a tyrant king. With Tapen Chatterjee and Rabi Ghosh in the lead roles, the movie is an excellent criticism on fascism and tyranny. Utpal Dutta’s performance as the Hirak Raja is a historical one.
