There is no denying that the MCU has brought immense success to Marvel. Diversification of stories and characters, interconnected nature, successful revitalisation of classic comic book characters, like Iron Man and Captain America, and many more elements have aided the superhero franchise in becoming the most successful movie franchise of all time. But before the franchise’s existence, Marvel delivered some cool and stylish superhero flicks that are considered cult classics nowadays, and one of them is Wesley Snipes’ Blade (1998).
The film revolves around the titular character, Blade, a half-human and half-vampire superhero who takes on the vampires of the underworld. With the help of his mentor and friend, Whistler, Blade looks to slay all the pure vampires and stop their plans for domination. All hell break lose after Deacon Frost unleashes an ancient vampire deity. We see Blade taking on his most dangerous nemesis ever to save humanity.
Director Stephen Norrington’s direction seems like he did not take things too seriously while shooting the film. Yet, he managed to make a cool and highly entertaining film. And special thanks to Wesley Snipes, whose intriguing and intense performance as the protagonist contributed substantially to the film’s success (both critically and financially). In addition, the flick bestows bloody but stylish action sequences. The rest of the cast does an impressive job too. Overall, Blade is a film worth watching.
Blade earned over $131 million globally against its $45 million budget during its theatrical run. It stars Wesley Snipes, Stephen Dorff, Kris Kristofferson, Donal Logue, and more. It is available on Netflix. Enjoy!
