Following the successful premiere of Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh’s latest rom-com drama, We Live in Time, at the 49th Toronto International Film Festival on Friday, we have compiled some of the best first reactions to the film for all of you guys. Don’t get tensed, the majority of critical responses are highly positive toward the upcoming John Crowley flick.
Critics have praised the performances and the chemistry between the leading duo. Crowley’s handling of the film’s non-linear narrative has received praise as well. The film’s time-hopping structure is expertly handled by Crowley and editor Justine Wright. They seamlessly blend joyful and tear-jerking moments. The film’s appeal goes beyond its star power, but Pugh and Garfield’s dynamic performance elevates it to a whole new level.
Apart from Pugh and Garfield, the film’s cast has talents like Adam James, Marama Corlett, Aoife Hinds, Heather Craney, Kara Lynch, and more. Nick Payne has written the story and screenplay.
A24 will release ‘We Live in Time’ in the United States on October 11. Whereas, it will premiere in the United Kingdom and Ireland on January 1, 2025.
Many of the first reactions to ‘We Live in Time’ have declared it “one of the year’s best”. The film benefits immensely from the “charismatic” and “devastating” performances of Pugh and Garfield.

Brandon Lewis from Geeks Vibes Nation calls the movie “the perfect rom-com, with an extraordinary balance of humor and genuine heartbreak.”
We Live in Time might be the perfect rom-com, with an extraordinary balance of humor and genuine heartbreak that never feels out of step or false. Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh are effortless, shimmering pair. One of the best surprises of #TIFF2024, perhaps a People’s Choice. pic.twitter.com/3yUDMrwsj2

Clayton Davis from Variety sings praises for the film and points out how it benefits from “the charismatic and chemistry-driven turns by Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh.”
John Crowley's #WeLiveInTime is a sweet and joyful love story, wrapped into the charismatic and chemistry-driven turns by Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh. It doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it's still a beautiful wheel nonetheless. Sniffles filled the Princess of Wales Theatre… pic.twitter.com/Fft7zLbA8v

Matt Brennan from LA Times compared the movie’s reception at the event to last year’s Jeffrey Wright’s American Fiction.
WE LIVE IN TIME: A crowd-pleasing romantic dramedy that, for all its structural play, needs, and gets, richly charismatic performances from Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh. Last year at TIFF the only film received so rapturously was AMERICAN FICTION. Make of that what you will.

Will Bjarnar from Film Independent called the movie “overly sappy melodrama” but praised the “stellar” performances from the leading duo.
florence pugh and andrew garfield are both ✨stellar✨ in WE LIVE IN TIME, which is precisely what it needs to elevate beyond overly-sappy melodrama and instead be something that feels profound, even when it isn’t. surprisingly funny, wholly moving. the crowd ate it up. #TIFF2024 pic.twitter.com/DKgTDhfzu5

Brian Tallerico from Roger Ebert praises the film’s ability to tug viewers’ heartstrings in his positive review.
WE LIVE IN TIME "is a film that looks you in the eyes as it tugs on your heartstrings, a movie that would almost certainly fall apart with lesser performers to make this kind of shallow script feel organic."
