Debi Choudhurani is one of the most intriguing projects from the Bengali film industry at the moment. It is a story of huge renown, a literary classic, and has been adapted into film and TV multiple times. It is at the same time a very risky project too.
There is no surprise element (if the director does Not come up with some extraordinary twist, taking liberty from the original text) that can attract audiences. We have seen with Srijit Mukherjee’s ‘Ek Je Chilo Raja’ that he has taken much creative liberty from the previous adaptations of the same story and based his tale more on official records of the case and it went on to be a great success.
The actors in the movie are big names too. Prasenjit Chatterjee playing Bhabani Thakur is the perfect casting for the role. Arjun Chakroborty, Sabyasachi Chakroborty, Darshana Banik and Kinjal Nanda in different roles will be interesting to see in a period drama of this scale. But there is little doubt about the lead role. Actress Srabanti is playing Devi Choudhurani and it seems that the audience does Not have much trust on her and think she might Not be able to pull of such an intense role.
Devi Choudhurani comes from filmmaker Shubhrajit Mitra and it will be a difficult test for him. If he manages to do justice to the story, he will then be regarded as one of the stalwarts in the industry.
The movie comes out on the 22nd of September this year and there is huge competition for the movie in theatres. Re-releases are running wild with help of nostalgia and there are some new titles coming out as well. This is a tough time to release a Bengali period drama this month.
