In a country of diverse cultural regions like India, it often happens that one region gets overpowered by another, especially in terms of mainstream media. So much so, that the general audiences need a reminder of their existence. A similar case is being observed with Marathi cinema, of late.
While the industry is slowly coming to the limelight with releases like the critically acclaimed SonyLiv series ‘Manvat Murders’, as well as the theatrical release of ‘Paani’, a National Award winning 2019 film, the Marathi industry continues to have a long way to go. However, titles that seem to be based completely off of gore and bloody violence, doesn’t quite seem the way to move ahead.
Case in point: ‘Raanti’, an upcoming Marathi-language film slated for a theatrical release on November 22. The feature, starring Sharad Kelkar, Shanvi Srivastava, and Santosh Juvekar in leading roles follows a man with a deeply troubled history, who takes it upon himself to shield a young girl from relentless enemies determined to end her life.
The action film, as is pretty evident from the trailer, is essentially a moodboard of bloody snippets that border on the uncomfortable. So much so, that it might just prove to limit the film’s audience, as gore of this level is not what a majority of the audiences are drawn to.
Which is to say, if industries like the Marathi film industry aim to become mainstream anytime soon, the one thing they need to do is come up with films and shows that will appeal to the masses.
