The Matrix Resurrections is the newest edition of the cult classic Keanu Reeves trilogy. Well after this film, it is not a trilogy anymore but it is quite certain that people are not loving it the way they do the originals.
As of now, the film has got 66% ratings from critics and 67% from the audience. This is certainly not what the audience was expecting it to be.
If we judge The Matrix from a 2021 perspective then it is not a great film. But when it was released, then it shaped the way modern science fiction is perceived. It was not only a huge commercial success but also developed a cult following.
In the past as well, we have seen some films that were destroyed after producers continued them.
The best example of this is The Godfather. This well-known legendary film became the career-defining role for Marlin Brandon and Al Pacino. It is even a highly decorative film in the already great filmography of Robert De Niro as well.
The first two parts were released in the 70s but the final one came in 1990. It is pretty obvious that the third part was a disgrace to the first two films and hardly anyone liked it.
Another example of this is the legendary Star Wars, whose legacy was brutally destroyed after the rights went into the hands of Disney.
Even the exceptional filmmaker Quentin Tarantino criticised the continuation at the hands of Disney.
So applies to The Terminator and a few more. The fact is, if audience pressure forces a series to continue instead of the passion of the makers, then such mess-ups are inevitable.
The Matrix Resurrections proved this yet another time.
