One of the directors and executive producers of MCU’s What If…? Disney+ series, Bryan Andrews, has confirmed that the Marvel Zombies will have the TV-MA (Mature Audience Only) rating. It means Marvel fans should expect plenty of blood, violence, and gore in the upcoming Iman Vellani starrer. Yeah, Kamala Khan, aka Ms Marvel, will serve as “the Frodo of the story” in the show.
In his recent interview with Phase Zero, Andrews guaranteed that Marvel Zombies would be “crazy” and disclosed that the series would have the TV-MA rating.
“That’s going to be crazy,” Andrews said. “Yeah, [it’s] full TV-MA. It’s spawning off of what was done on Episode [105]. The notion was, there’s some inspiration from the comic, the fact that they’re zombies, but we’re not doing the comic, like, in any stretch. We have our own take on it, and a lot of that stuff has been set up by our talented writers early on, so, just taking that and… exploring that mythology in that episode a bit more. So, yeah, it’s crazy.”
Episode 105 is the fifth episode of What If…? Season 1. That episode deals with the consequences of a worldwide zombie apocalypse, which also ends up infecting many Avengers (such as Iron Man, Captain America, Falcon, Hawkeye, and more), taking inspiration from the popular Marvel Zombies comic book series. Some of the survivors, like Bruce Banner, Bucky Barnes, Okoye, Happy Hogan, Sharon Carter, and Hope van Dyne, try to find the cure for the zombie virus. The episode ends with a plot twist, showing a zombified Thanos wielding the Infinity Gauntlet with all the Infinity Stones present on it.
Given the current status of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, more shows with a TV-MA rating could save the crumbling superhero franchise. Yes, projects with a ‘mature age’ rating do not make all things great, but they could serve as tools for Marvel Studios to diversify their storylines. The MCU has been known for adhering strictly to a family-friendly tone for many years. But they could also benefit from some Rated-R projects.
It does not mean that all upcoming Marvel projects should have a ‘mature age’ rating. At the end of the day, fans just want to watch great storylines. However, if the storylines demand more darkness or violence, then projects with TV-MA or Rated-R ratings will definitely work.
Marvel Zombies will arrive on the Disney+ streaming platform this year. Stay tuned for more updates.
