The problem of repetitive insta-friendly music is not exclusive to Bollywood only but it has infected other industries too. And the Bengali industry suffers from some more problems in the field of music.
The slight experimentation that is being done in some of the Hindi movies and shows are still good. We recently got stories like ‘Qala’, ‘Monica! Oh My Darling’, ‘Maidaan’ and more that have used music in a wonderful way. But there is a clear drought in Bengali.
Previously, there was the stalwart Rituparno Ghosh, whose vision in using music as an artistic device was extraordinary and other filmmakers like Koushik Ganguly, Srijit Mukherjee were heavily influenced by him as well. For now, these directors are coming with many movies, but the striking music is not there anymore.
Composers like Debojyoti Mishra are not used anymore. There are composers like Ishan Mitra and Indradip Dasgupta who have done wonderful jobs in the last few years, but the work graph seems pretty dim this year. There is something seriously wrong and music needs to be taken seriously by the filmmakers in Tollygunge, especially because the industry has such a rich heritage of film music.
Even composers like Jit Ganguly have to be utilized properly and there should be enough scope for the musicians to explore new varieties and do experiments within the narrative.
