In the last few years, we have seen millennials flood social media with dark humour and sarcasm primarily with the help of memes. While this may be a cool and hip way of interacting with your followers online, there is a fine line between what can be called fun and derogatory. Eros Now has faced severe backlash for a set of distasteful memes that they shared regarding ‘Navratri’. The public clearly made it known that they weren’t going to take any of it.
OTT platforms have always been looking for new and innovative ways to market their stuff and increase viewership, and almost all of them have tried to tap into this meme culture so that they can grow their audience to a broader base.
One can understand that they want to project a ‘Dope’ image of themselves, but this is definitely a case where they took it too far, and the internet has not held back in giving them a piece of their mind with the #boycotterosnow trending on Twitter.
Eros Now has even issued an apology on their official Twitter handle while taking down those memes subsequently, but that hasn’t stopped the public outrage against them. Many of the online trolls were adamant in saying that Eros Now has purposely done this to hurt the religious sentiments of a particular section of India.
We do not wish to assume anything when it comes to such sensitive matters which is why we leave it up to the readers to interpret as to what was Eros Now thinking with such distasteful memes or whether it was a just a cheap marketing trick which went horribly wrong for them.
