JioCinema has failed to stand out as an OTT giant in spite of many efforts. The brand has done some huge international deals in the past few years but has not been able to match up to the expectations of subscribers.
According to media reports, the platform will now shut down and continue as a merger with Disney+Hotstar. Disney+Hotstar has a huge subscriber base in India and has been satisfying audiences with its wonderful service for a long time.
JioCinema merging with Disney+Hotstar will re-establish Hotstar as the best in the craft and JioCinema will lose its identity. Actually, JioCinema has not been able to carve out a niche and do something extraordinary in Indian OTT. Fans were disappointed with the sports streaming. The originals were not upto the mark as well. The platform could not do what JioStudios has been doing in the theatrical space.
We cannot say whether this will be the right decision for JioCinema, but it will definitely create an edge for Hotstar. Together, there will be an awesome library of international content. The competition in sports will go away and the wonderful Hotstar originals will continue to contribute to the channel.
It might as well prove a win-win for both. But it comes as a risk for platforms like Zee5, Netflix and SonyLIV as the competition will now be much harder for them.
