Dulquer Salmaan’s ‘Kurup’ is the breakout Malayalam hit of the year in the post-Covid period. Despite theatres opening up everywhere, Malayalam filmmakers predominantly continued to release their films on OTT. Even big ticket ones such as Malik, Churuli and Kuruthi went the OTT way instead of braving a theatrical release. Dulquer Salmaan chose to buck the trend with ‘Kurup’.
Streaming platforms offered insane amounts of money to lure the young Malayalam star to release Kurup directly on their platforms. For a while, Dulquer Salmaan seemed to have given in to the temptation of selling his labour of love to Netflix or Disney Plus Hotstar or Prime Video, and making easy money. But the magic of cinema prevailed and Kurup released in theatres. The effect was instantaneous. Kurup recorded huge footfalls in theatres across the world and raced to grand box office collections. Yes, Dulquer Salmaan‘s Kurup was an unequivocal hit for the star.
Now that Kurup has enjoyed a fantastic run in the theatres, it’s time to release the film on streaming. For the benefit of those who still prefer to play it safe due to the pandemic, and watch films only at home on streaming, Kurup is soon coming to OTT.
