Film Federation Of India surprised every filmgoer by choosing Gujarati film Chhello Show as India’s Official Oscar entry to the Oscars 2023 for Best International Film and by denying this honour to the most obvious choices RRR and The Kashmir Files, especially considering the huge commercial success and popularity of RRR overseas, more specifically USA.
Now that the film has been selected as India’s Official Oscar entry, it has garnered some buzz around its theatrical release and availability on streaming platforms.
Directed by Pan Nalin, this less known Gujarati film which tells the story of a little nine year old boy, is set to arrive in cinemas on 14 October. The film was earlier available to stream exclusively on streaming platform MUBI, but now it has been removed from the platform, maybe to allow the makers to create the buzz around the theatrical release of the film, especially after its selection as India’s Official Oscar entry.
The critically acclaimed coming-of-age drama, which stars Bhavin Rabari, Bhavesh Shrimali, Richa Meena, Dipen Raval and Paresh Mehta in lead roles, had its premiere at the 20th Tribeca Film Festival on 10 June 2021 and has also bagged the top ‘Audience Award’ at the 13th London Indian Film Festival in July 2022.
Pan Nalin’s semi-autobiographical Gujarati feature tells a story of a nine-years-old kid who gets engrossed in cinema after watching several films through summer by entering a cinema hall projection booth.
