American multimedia franchise and shared universe featuring iconic characters like Godzilla and King Kong is popularly termed the ‘MonsterVerse’. It consists of five films and two television series that have been produced by Legendary Pictures, in collaboration with Warner Bros.
The franchise kicked off with the introduction of one of the beasts in ‘Godzilla’ in 2014. The other leading character was introduced in ‘Kong: Skull Island’ in 2017. Despite numerous films giving a mediocre performance at the box office in the aftermath of COVID-19, the MonsterVerse films persevered.
2021’s ‘Godzilla x Kong’ garnered an impressive $470 million worldwide. Moreover, following the raving success of the latest title in the MonsterVerse ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’, a succeeding title was a no-brainer! Therefore, Legendary Studios has tapped filmmaker Grant Sputore to direct the next theatrical venture in the franchise.
Sputore worked his way up from the world of commercials, and as a film director helmed the acclaimed sci-fi title ‘I Am Mother’, starring Hilary Swank. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival before hitting Netflix in 2019.
The script for the awaited title will come from prolific genre scribe Dave Callaham, known for ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ and ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’.
