Why DC Can’t Afford To Have AyerCut …And Why They Should

Why DC Can’t Afford To Have AyerCut …And Why They Should

To those of you who did not know, DC fans who are active on social media have been calling for the David Ayer version of the 2016 Anti-Superhero teamup film Suicide Squad. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram – you name it, DC fans have been clamouring on the official pages of Warner Bros. & DC Comics and to a lesser extent HBO’s as well to get the “AyerCut”. And after looking at the 2016 released final product, we can’t help but agree.

The movement for AyerCut got huge after the release of the SnyderCut version Justice League was announced. Zac Snyder even got an additional USD 30 million to complete his version of the 2017 version of the critical dud. Since Snydercut got approved and eventually got a release date, it made sense that the Suicide Squad could also get a director’s cut as well.

But so far HBO and Warner Bros. has not approved any other alternate version of Suicide Squad – and actually, for good reason. The sequel/ spinoff for the 2016 Suicide Squad titled The Suicide Squad is expected to drop in theaters on 4th August 2021. So releasing the AyerCut version of Suicide Squad is actually redundant and could even mess with the continuity (eventhough DC Cinematic Universe storylines are messed up and convoluted) that 2021’s The Suicide Squad could bring.

So the AyerCut will have to wait. But there is one thing that the Warner Bros. Productions has done better than Disney and it is the integration of their (DC) TV shows into DC’s Cinematic Universe. They have also explained away the multiple universe theory in CW’s The Flash and has even re-written multiple events in the DC universe. So there is actually a spot for AyerCut’s version out there – even maintaining proper continuity.

So fans should still campaign for the AyerCut. There are loads of unused footage which was left at the drawing board and David Ayer believes, along with us, that this footage needs to be shown to the world, or at the very least, the fans deserve it. Jared Leto’s Joker was woefully misused and underused, the last third ending was extremely sketchy and we hopefully will see a better ending for Diablo. Also we expect this version of the film to be received differently by the fans and WB Productions should allow Ayer to go through with it. WB will also understand how a studio holding creative control, especially a comic book film can adversely affect a movie (without a clear drawn out plan).

As of now, we should just campaign while Ayer will (hopefully) continue to supply the short-clip footages to keep the crowds going; feed the frenzy, in a sense. He dropped a short 3 second video involving Joker in the middle of January and twitter quite frankly went nuts. Check out the tweet down below:
