Disney reported its latest quarterly results on Tuesday and it says that Disney+ has got 12.1 million more subscribers in the recent quarter. ESPN+ has added 7 million subscribers and Hulu 3.4 million more. And Disney+ reached a grand 164.2 million subscribers as it prepares for its ad supported tier launch next month.
Disney+, ESPN+, and Hulu are the three main streaming platforms of Walt Disney Co. And the combined subscriber base of these platforms have overtaken the total of more than 223 million user base of Netflix globally.
Disney and Netflix are competing for viewers, and both are lower priced ad supported tiers for cost-conscious subscribers. Netflix launched its ad supported network this month and Disney will do the same on December 8.
Disney seems to have an edge over Netflix for the Marvel franchise. The multiple superhero shows that are streaming in Disney+ makes it more appealing to a larger audience. Web series like ‘Daredevil‘, ‘Punisher’, ‘Defenders’ ‘Wanda-Vision’ and the recent ones like ‘Moon Knight’ and
‘Werewolf By Night‘ are upping the game with the superhero genre. Disney is creating a monopoly with a huge teenage user base only because of its variety and range of these shows. There is no doubt Netflix originals that are great and are being loved by audiences and the platform is producing great originals in the genres of True Crime or documentaries. But it seems, superhero shows still have a larger appeal for most of the audiences and Disney is taking full advantage of that with its exclusive Marvel originals.
