Unlock 4 guidelines have been declared and it extends no respite for the multiplexes. No one knows when the ticket counter will open again. In the past few months, ever since the country was put into a lockdown in wake of the Covid Pandemic, several movies like Dil Bechara, Yaara, Lootcase, Shakuntala Devi, and the recent Sadak 2 found a home online.
However, as evident, Filmmaker Boney Kapoor is not very excited about the idea of OTT platforms being the new venue for releasing upcoming movies, though his daughter’s latest, Gunjan Saxena had released on one. He took to Twitter to bring netizen’s focus to the debacle movie makers have found themselves in.

Speaking with ETimes, Boney said, “Cinema is meant to be enjoyed in cinema halls. Now definitely the situation is such that there cannot be large public gathering and that is why the cinemas are shut. But at the same time, whenever the situation gets better, there are stages where things are opening up… Industry will thrive only when the cinemas will open. Even today, the revenue of a filmmaker almost is 50% from the cinema hall. We should not forget that cinemas are part of our life and it is the cheapest form of entertainment for the audience.”
While many filmmakers are happy to consider an OTT release for their movies stuck in the Covid pandemic, Boney Kapoor has always been averse to the idea of it. Taking pride in how he has not given any of his movies an OTT release in his 40-year-long Bollywood career, he has dismissed chances of his upcoming, Ajay Devgn starrer Maidan to have an OTT release. The shooting schedule in halted and would restart only after November, Kapoor is willing to wait for a theatre-screening. Though Maidan was scheduled to release in 2020, it is now looking at a mid-2021 release.
