The Broken News is coming soon on Zee5 and it is highly important for the platform. But before that, the audience and the platform must remember a few things.
Zee5 was one of the most prominent and promising platforms when Indian OTT was just taking baby steps. Their ‘Karenjit Kaur’, based on Sunny Leone was a sensation amongst youth but something went lost.
Zee5’s prominence in the OTT industry lasted as long as a bubble and other platforms like Disney+Hotstar and Prime Video started dominating.
So where did it all go wrong? And why is The Broken News so important?
Unfortunately, Zee5 couldn’t catch up with the content that other platforms were providing. Netflix India grabbed Saif Ali Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in Sacred Games, Prime Video became a national sensation with Mirzapur and Disney+Hotstar with Special Ops and Aarya.
They either roped in prominent Bollywood celebrities or gave a content that the audience couldn’t help but fall in obsession with.
Zee5 didn’t do anything like that. Unfortunately, that is why it went out of the arena and is struggling even today.
The Broken News stars Jaideep Ahlawat who became a popular face after Pataal Lok, so applies to Shriya Pilgaonkar who is kinda known amongst series lovers thanks to Mirzapur and Guilty Minds.
The most important addition however is Sonali Bendre who was extremely famous for her beauty and charm in the 90s. She was indeed one of the most popular actresses in Bollywood at that time.
Also, the subject isn’t something uninteresting like 36 Farm House. There is a scope of sensationalism and given the current situations, a series on media may actually work.
In Mithya too, Zee5 presented Huma Qureshi in the lead role but the series was not at all well-executed.
So now, this is the second time Zee5 is bringing a Bollywood celebrity on board and probably the first time when they are bringing a sensational show.
Thus it is going to be a litmus test. The Broken News will show whether people are interested in the platform or Zee5 will keep getting ignored.
