The Prime Video US has a library of more than 20,000 titles. To put things into perspective, Indian version Prime Video has only around 2,400 titles. The difference is noteworthy, and it is time to ponder why there is such a huge difference.
In the US, Prime Video has the most content among competition; Netflix, Hulu and, so on. The main reason is that Amazon has tied-up with maximum cable and satellite television networks there. Also, Netflix has been moving away from licensing non-exclusive content and tries to have mostly exclusive content on its platform while Prime Video does not hesitate in providing its customers with non-exclusive titles. Many questions have raised on the significant quantity difference, but Netflix declines to comment on the same.
Coming to Prime Video India, primarily the difference is because many of Amazon’s original shows have not yet made it to India. Another struggling deal for Amazon, here in India, is the content licensing due to which the library has less than 2,500 titles in total. Eros Now, having over 11,000 films alone amongst other content, is the king of the number of titles in India. Apart from this, international content is another area where Prime Video has not been able to catch up. Popular shows like FRIENDS, Breaking Bad, Sherlock etc. are exclusively available on Netflix, while Game of Thrones, Westworld, The Wire etc. on Disney+ Hotstar and similarly for movies.
Although, Prime Video India has been trying to add more and more titles to its library with a mix of originals, Bollywood and regional content. It will be interesting to see how the scenario shapes up in the coming future having stiff competition, however, reaching the same number as Prime Video US library would be almost impossible for Amazon and especially in a few years.
