Recently, it’s been obvious that Mollywood has been stirring up quite the commotion when it comes to the movies they produce, with the big names being Bramayugam, Manjummel Boys, and Premalu doing numbers at the box office, and the year has only begun. It is no surprise that they are able to do what they have done, and today we will dive just a bit deeper into analysing what Mollywood does so impeccably and boldly.
Firstly, Mollywood cinemas have now entered a phase of breaking the star system. A superstar of the industry who has been at its centre for more than 40 years, is taking on a completely different, experimental role where he/she is not the central character of the story, case in point, Mammootty in Bramayugam. Veterans like himself and others are now perfecting the art of just having fun in their career after having reached the zenith of their field. The versatility showcased by icons like him redefine the expectations of what a superstar is in the industry and paves the way for greater success. In addition to that, Mollywood movies now focus on making the very characters within their movies, the actual stars, and not just the actual cast themselves.
Next, Mollywood does a phenomenal job in showcasing the locations at each set of various films. Examples here are Premalu with its beautiful, realistic, raw exhibition of Hyderabad, and Manjummel Boys with their terrific portrayal of the intimidating Gunaa caves. Premalu has highlighted Hyderabad in ways native Telugu films haven’t which adds to its essence. The depiction of Bengaluru in Bangalore Days has pushed so many young adults for trips to the place, Varane Avashyamundu has shown Chennai in its purest form. Mollywood craftsmen know and understand the importance the location plays and how to interweave it into the fabric of their stories, and this resonates with audiences beyond just the native states, hence contributing to its success. Mollywood also does a fantastic job in paying tributes to other industries with so much care, love and respect that it strikes an emotional, sentimental chord with viewers from other native states.
All in all, if you haven’t seen the biggest blockbusters of Mollywood this year as mentioned above, start with those and see for yourself as to why Malayalam Cinema is a breeding ground for greatness.
