Okay. The last few days have been nuts. NUTS. The amount of cast members returning, expected to return or rumored to return for the latest sequel of Tom Holland’s ‘Spiderman’ has been ridiculous. We are half afraid that by the time we publish this article, Hulk and Thor will be speculated to be in the movie as well because they were excluded in the ‘Captain America: Civil War’ (we wish we were kidding but with the developments in the last few days, anything is possible).
As it stands, there have been new developments in ‘Spiderman 3’ (working title), with the film acquiring more and more stars to portray prominent characters from Marvel’s (and Sony’s) previous films and television series. There are so many characters added now that there is a very good chance that we are looking at another possible ‘Civil War’. Let’s take a look at the new additions of Spiderman 3.
First thing’s first – Charlie Cox will be appearing in ‘Spiderman 3’ as Daredevil. This will be Marvel Studios first time acknowledging “Marvel’s (now scrapped) Television Universe” on the silver screen. We are also excited to see Spiderman and Daredevil together for the first time on the silver screen. In the comics, both heroes operate in different sections of New York City but they have been known to teamup who are also very good friends who know each others’ civilian identities and we can’t wait to see them both banter on-screen. Depending on the success of this film, there is a very good chance we could be seeing Charlie Cox (and the rest of the cast of Daredevil) returning for Daredevil – be it for the silver screen or the small one.
Both the female leads of the previous Spiderman franchise – Kirsten Dunst and Emma Stone are said to be reprising their roles as MJ and Gwen Stacy, while the Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire will return as “Spidermen”. Currently Dunst and Garfield have confirmed their involvement in the sequel while Maguire and Stone are still undergoing negotiations with Marvel. Jamie Foxx and Alfred Molina have confirmed their involvement and they will be returning to play the villains Electro and Doctor Octopus. Marvel is undergoing negotiations to bring Micheal Keaton back as The Vulture. And since all of this involves “interdimensional travel”, Dr. Strange is definitely involved – Benedict Cumberbatch has already confirmed his involvement in the film.
Okay. If we (the fans) are lucky, and everyone confirms their involvement (fingers crossed), then we are very much looking at atleast 8 – 9 “non Holland-Spiderman” characters returning to this franchise. And this is not even counting the fact that Aunt May from the first ‘Spiderman’ franchise, Kingpin or even Foggy or Karen from ‘Daredevil’ could be making an appearance here. What’s more, with Mysterio not dying in ‘Spiderman: Far From Home’, we could be looking at a possible Sinister Six set up.
Mysterio, The Vulture, Doctor Octopus, Electro, Hobgoblin and The Kingpin have all been a part of the Sinister Six at some point in the comics (and a few games). If we get all 6 villains to appear in the upcoming ‘Spiderman 3’, we could be looking at Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first ever Villain Team Up.
Dane Dehaan is currently in talks to return as the Hobgoblin while acting legend Willem Dafoe has been asked to return to play the Green Goblin on screen once more. WIll we see James Franco returning? Possibly even Thomas Haden Church who played Sandman? Maybe even Topher Grace who portrayed Venom in ‘Spiderman 3’; but does that mean even Tom Hardy and or Woody Harrelson could return as well? What about Ryan Reynolds and his on-screen merc-with-a-mouth persona?
There are a lot of directions Marvel can take for this film and the Sinister Six route is looking good and extremely appealing. We can’t wait for Marvel to release this film and we hope it’s worth all the hype. Fingers crossed.
