At last, we have a release date for ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’. The film will arrive in theatres worldwide on May 22, 2026. The last Star Wars feature was Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker, which came out in 2019. And we have no fixed release dates for Daisy Ridley’s next Star Wars project and James Mangold’s Dawn of the Jedi film. This means we are looking at a nearly seven-year-long gap between the release dates of Episode IX and the next Jon Favreau film. While many fans are excited about seeing the next chapter of Din Djarin’s life on the big screen, there are some who are not ecstatic about the film.
Lucasfilm has confirmed the newly announced release window of The Mandalorian and Grogu. In addition, fans will witness the return of Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin and his cute-looking ward, Grogu, in the forthcoming Star Wars film.
From a financial standpoint, The Mandalorian and Grogu can do wonders at the global box office. It can even surpass the prestigious $1 billion mark. But do we really need the film?
From being one of the most lovable Star Wars characters to being ‘just another annoying Star Wars creature’, Grogu has indeed travelled a long journey. Many fans believe Grogu’s story should have ended with The Mandalorian Season 2. In the second season’s finale, we witnessed Luke Skywalker taking Grogu with him to complete his Jedi training. This broke Din, but he knew how important it was for Grogu to learn to control his connection with the Force. This indeed was a powerful and emotional moment, which could have left a long-lasting impact. Instead, they ruined it by reuniting Grogu with Mando in The Book of Boba Fett series, a completely different show.
Then we got The Mandalorian Season 3, which should have been titled ‘The Book of Bo-Katan’. Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni are the saviours of Star Wars. There’s no denying that. But they improperly handled Season 3. The third season should have been about Din Djarin and his new adventures with Grogu. Instead, we got a story that focused more on Bo-Katan, sidelined Din and treated Grogu like a laughing stock.
We don’t know whether Lucasfilm has replaced Season 4 with The Mandalorian and Grogu movie. Still, the film feels like a double-edged sword for the studio. First, the movie’s mere existence proves how badly the Star Wars franchise depends upon Din Djarin and Grogu. The latter is undeniably adorable. But sometimes, his cuteness overshadows other actors’ performances. Just ask Pedro Pascal about it! In addition, The Mandalorian Disney+ series has received criticism for not developing Din Djarin’s character enough. So, we should not expect any significant character development for him in the upcoming ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ movie as well. Stay tuned for more updates.
