Wizarding World’s latest project, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, is out now in several countries. Also, it is set for a worldwide premiere on April 15th. Despite being a major improvement over its predecessor, Crimes of Grindelwald, the third entry in the Fantastic Beasts franchise doesn’t have the magic to lure a large audience to the theatres. Many box office pundits have already predicted that the movie’s entire theatrical run may suffer from poor collections. Plus, it is now a ‘rotten’ film on the Rotten Tomatoes platform with a rating of 58% (97 reviews). And it seems like this rating will go down more after the film’s global premiere. Many experts have suggested that Wizarding World should depart from future FB instalments for good. Instead, the franchise should focus on other characters or stories.
Time has taught many prominent movie franchises to quit at the right time. How about we take Lucasfilm as an example here? We don’t know whether the gigantic success of ‘Episode VII: The Force Awakens’ inspired or made Kathleen Kennedy and the rest of her Lucasfilm team greedy. But the spectacular box office performance of the movie paved a way for many Star Wars projects, including the Anthology series. Then came ‘The Last Jedi’ and ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’. And we know what happened after the release of these movies.
TLJ severely butchered Rey’s and Luke Skywalker’s arcs in ‘The Skywalker Saga’ timeline. As a result, it encountered the wrath of the majority of the Star Wars fanbase. After that, the financial bombing of ‘Solo’ forced Lucasfilm to indefinitely defer future Anthology projects. However, the production company is now focused more on the Disney+ shows related to the Star Wars canon. The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series are some of the examples here.
Should Warner Bros concentrate on making other projects related to the Wizarding World? It may give the franchise a fresh start and a chance to do something great rather than milking the Fantastic Beasts series. But it all depends upon the box office performance of ‘The Secrets of Dumbledore’. The movie does a pretty good job of leaving behind the pitfalls that haunted its predecessor. Still, it fails to captivate the minds of its viewers. The fast-paced and predictable plot is the film’s biggest weakness. Although, both Crimes of Grindelwald and Secrets of Dumbledore suffer from one common thing. A poor climax.
All the above-mentioned things indicate that the Potterheads may not get future entries in the Fantastic Beasts series if ‘The Secrets of Dumbledore’ bombs during its current theatrical run. However, WB can save this franchise from meeting its doom. How? Well, it can try Lucasfilm’s strategy and start concentrating on making Wizarding World tv shows. Let us remind you that this J. K. Bowling franchise is yet to get a proper live-action tv series. And the British author has bestowed several amazing characters, creatures, and regions to the fans through her works over the years.
Will the Potterheads get a live-action Wizarding World tv series in future? Only time will tell us. Let’s see how well ‘The Secrets of Dumbledore’ performs in theatres. It stars Eddie Redmayne, Jude Law, Mads Mikkelsen, Dan Fogler, and many more with David Yates at the helm.
