The Malayalam movie came out of nowhere with very minimal marketing on social media and within the state of Kerala as well. But upon release, the movie managed to wow us as well as multiple SonyLIV subscribers. So this article is for you guys, the ones who are interested in watching a brilliant film over the weekend – here are 4 reasons why you should check out Kaanekkane on SonyLIV this weekend.
An Unexpected Thriller
While the teaser of the film did make the movie feel like a thriller – that is not how the film starts. The premise of the film is quite sad (and almost uninteresting) – with the background score and the brilliant direction keeping us invested in the film. But when the thriller part of the movie drops on screen – it is highly unexpected; but that thrill keeps a tight hold of our attention till the very end of Kaanekkane.
Not Your Typical Film Lead
While Tovino Thomas and Aishwarya Lekshmi are being marketed as Kaanekkane’s lead actors – they are actually not. Instead, the film is mostly told from the perspective of Suraj Venjaramoodu’s character – the true film lead. While Tovino’s character is close enough to be called the “second lead”, the film’s main mood-setter is Suraj. And he is absolutely brilliant.
An Emotional Rollercoaster
Unlike most thrills created in thriller films, which involves jump scares, horror, blood & gore, or something frightening & adrenaline-rushing – Kaanekkane uses emotions to create its thrills. This keeps the film’s thrills underrated – but when a “thrilling part” drops on screen, we are instantly emotionally invested.
Brilliant Casting
While the story of Kaanekkane is good, it is film casting that makes the movie so good. Suraj, Tovino, Aishwarya and the child actor, Master Alok are all perfectly cast and are required to play nuanced roles (including the young one) – which they nail perfectly.
