Leading OTT Major, Netflix released the Telugu film, Wild Dog starring Nagarjuna earlier this week. Wild Dog has got decent reviews at the box office but still underperformed. Irrespective of the box office performance, the movie has got good reception on Netflix.
The Telugu version is trending at #2 on the Netflix trends chart while the Tamil version is at #5. There are reports that the movie has amassed the highest views for a South Indian film on Netflix on opening day (Amongst Exclusive Releases). This is the first time a Telugu film has put up an interesting show on Netflix.
Interestingly, Wild Dog was initially planned as a Director OTT release but the makers pulled out of the deal at the last minute and released it in theaters. The COVID Second Wave has started in India by then and the audience did not show interest in coming to the theaters.
By the time, the movie released on Netflix, it carried the tag of a failure theatrical. It would have helped both parties if it released directly on Netflix. The negative feedback which the movie got in theaters would have been not the case with the OTT audience because they tend to be more liberal while watching a film at the comfort of their home couch.
In such a case, it would have been a gamechanger for Netflix which has been desperate to make inroads into the Telugu market. The makers would have also got a good price.
