The highly anticipated Malayalam action flick, Aaraattu was released in theatres in the middle of last month (February)… And it isn’t going well for the Mohanlal starrer. The movie premiered on February 18th 2022 to much fanfare, but the Malayalam mass entertainer failed to excite fans. While Mollywood actor Mohanlal made a (somewhat) decent showing, the movie has been mostly panned by critics and audiences alike. Since the movie is not doing all that well in theatres, talks are underway, regarding an early OTT release – and according to reports that have been coming out for a few days, Amazon Prime Video might have just nabbed Aarattu’s streaming rights.
Aaraattu was supposed to be a Malayalam film that represented a style of film that released during the mid-90s to early-2000s period – a time period when the film industry used to release a mass entertainer every other week. While the film may have worked a couple of decades ago, it feels outdated and the ridiculously cringey script makes the movie quite unbearable to watch. All of these are good reasons why the movie has not been able to break even at the box office yet. Hence the OTT release.
However, the Amazon Prime report has yet to be confirmed. According to multiple sources, the Malayalam action thriller will release on Amazon Prime Video by the end of this month, on 25th March 2022. The release date is a surprise, especially since neither the OTT camp nor the production company side has said that they are in contact with each other; at least, not officially. For now, we will have to wait and see.
