The much-anticipated Disney+ Hotstar special, Rudra: The Edge of Darkness, will come out later this year on the streaming platform. Ajay Devgn is playing the Bollywood version of Idris Elba’s Luther in the upcoming series. The show’s latest trailer has garnered a mixed-to-positive response from the viewers. Fans of Devgn loved the trailer, considering the actor’s tight grip in thriller or psychological drama projects. On the other hand, a fair portion of the streamers has expressed their concerns about the show. Will Devgn’s remake will ruin or honour the original BBC One series? Let’s dive deep into this mess.
We all know that Devgn is prominent for his action, comedy, and suspense thriller instalments in Bollywood. Despite some monumental setbacks, the actor has always found a way to come back strong and prove his versatility. And it seems like the ongoing trend of producing remakes of classic Hollywood or South Indian projects has lured him too. Bollywood is utilising this trend as a safe bet for earning massive profits through theatrical or OTT releases these days. However, the conventional method of sprinkling the remakes with a touch of Bollywood masala has butchered countless classics. We don’t think we have to mention their names here.
This scenario has started worrying the fans of the original Luther series. Elba delivered one of his finest performances ever in that outstanding BBC project. His powerhouse performance worked just fine with the show’s dark and gritty ambience. Plus, he had the talented Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson) as his nemesis and unwanted ally, except for the fourth season. Will Devgn do the same? Or did he do something different with his character?
The latest Rudra trailer looked tense and suspenseful. Additionally, the show treasures a talented cast of Raashi Khanna, Esha Deol, Atul Kulkarni, Ashish Vidhyarthi, Ashwini Kalsekar, and many more apart from Devgn. And it looks like Luke Kenny will be the prime antagonist here. According to some rumours, Khanna may portray the Indian version of Alice Morgan in the upcoming series. She has established herself as one of the well-known leading ladies in the South Indian movie industry. But the audience has never seen her in such a complicated role before. Ruth Wilson made the role of Alice her own. She was able to bring out Alice’s cold, astute, and menacing persona in a flawless manner. There is no doubt in admitting that Khanna has a near-impossible task to do the same.
As for Devgn, his fanbase believes that the Bollywood actor will do justice to Elba’s Luther. But the present treatment of remakes in this industry is constantly worrying the fans of the original series. Let’s hope the star cast and the direction of Rajesh Mapsukar don’t mess up Rudra.
Rudra: The Edge of Darkness starring Ajay Devgn will stream soon on Disney+ Hotstar.
