A bad phase doesn’t define any artist or his whole career and we have seen that in case of Shah Rukh Khan very recently. Same can be said for Akshay Kumar, who is going through a rough patch right now as far as his film career is concerned, but it nowhere means he isn’t a good actor.
There was a time in 2007 when Akshay delivered four consecutive blockbusters and his mainstream success soared high. And it continued even after that, barring the little dip from 2009 to 2011, where he reinforced himself as a top grade actor in the Hindi film industry.
The success streak continued from 2012 to 2021, in between which came films where he received critical acclaim such as for ‘Rowdy Rathore’ (2012), ‘Special 26’ (2013), ‘Holiday’ (2014), ‘Baby’ (2015), ‘Rustom’ (2016), ‘Airlift’ (2017), ‘Jolly LLB 2’ (2017), ‘Toilet: Ek Prem Katha’ (2017), ‘Pad Man’ (2018), ‘Kesari’ (2019); and also set box office records with films like ‘Mission Mangal’, ‘Housefull 4’, ‘Good Newwz’ and ‘Sooryvanshi’.
But for the past couple of years (specially since the lockdown and after) except for ‘OMG 2’, Akshay Kumar has seen a major dip in his career where he has had back to back flops. While we won’t get into each film’s details, the major reason cited for this setback is that Akshay has a lot on his plate and he isn’t able to do justice to any of them.
Well, it’s not totally wrong. The actor has been doing not one or two but four to five films a year, utilising his time to the maximum but as a result it’s the quality of these films that’s getting compromised. Moreover, movie buffs expect a lot more from an actor of his stature and he hasn’t been living upto it recently.
Now that he is reuniting with his ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa’ director Priyadarshan, fans are once again excited to see what magic they will recreate as they venture into horror comedy just like the last time.
No doubt, Akshay has one of the best comic timing in the industry and is a pro at it. It will be interesting and exciting to see him step back into the comedy shoes and bring back his A game.
