Some films get love and adoration both at the movies and streaming platforms like RRR and Gangubai Kathiawadi. Some really good films go underappreciated at the movies, but eventually garner the appreciation they deserve when out on streaming platforms. It seems like the latest Anubhav Sinha directorial ‘Anek‘ is one of them. Anek is currently streaming on Netflix India.
The film had a theatrical release on 27th May and met with disastrous reception at the box-office. While the film opened to mixed reviews, it seems like Netflix has opened doors to the right kind of audience for the film. In just a day the film is trending at #1 on Netflix Top 10. And we assume the trending to get stronger over the week and even give tight competition to Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 on Netflix India, if not at the box-office.
If the assumptions ring true, Anek will add on to be third consecutive streaming success for director Anubhav Sinha. His Article 15 (2019) starring Ayushmann Khurrana was a huge success both at the box-office and Netflix India. The film was even remade in multiple languages. He followed this up with Thappad (2020) which did fairly well commercially despite covid-19 scare and was a thundering success on Amazon Prime as well. While Article 15 was a closer look at deep running horrors of casteism in India and Thappad was a slap at patriarchy normalising domestic violence, Anek is a closer look at the Insurgency and ‘othering’ of North-East India by mainlanders.
Anek follows a government police secret agent official who is sent to the North-East to negotiate a peace deal between the government and the separatist groups in the North East. Anubhav Sinha wrote and directed ‘Anek’ and co-produced the film along with T-Series. Besides Ayushmann Khurrana, JD Chakravarthy, Andrea Kevichüsa, Manoj Pahwa and Kumud Mishra stars in the film.
