As per the media reports, there will soon be a remake for the Tamil movie ‘Aaranya Kaandam’ which was directed by the master filmmaker Thiagraja Kumaraja.
It was previously speculated that the film will be produced under the banner of Tips Entertainment and the director Ajay Bahl was roped in for the remake. Ajay Bahl is known for films like Section 375.
However, now it is reported that the movie will be produced by 12th Street Entertainment owned by Akshay Puri. Other details have not been revealed yet.
The movie ‘Aaranya Kaandam’ came out in 2010 and was a massive hit. The movie starred actors like Jackie Shroff, Ravi Krishna, Sampath Raj, Yasmin Ponnappa, Guru Somasundaram and Master Vasanth. The movie told the story of Singaperumal, a gangster who still feels a simulacrum of power in older age, but has to confront many situations when he tries to beat his arch enemy.
Aaranya Kaandam is a critically acclaimed movie that tasted of commercial success as well. But looking at the recent remakes that Bollywood has done, it does look like a very good prospect. Bholaa, the remake of Kaithi was a box office failure and failed to recreate the Lokesh Kanagaraj magic. Shahzada too failed to create a lasting impression on the audiences. Bollywood tends to take the creative liberties for granted and make many twists and turns in the story, which takes away the essence of the films. Vikram Vedha was an exception, but despite being a wonderful remake it was a disaster.
It will be a very difficult remake of Aaranya Kaandam as it has Thiagraja written all over it. The filmmaker will have to do much work to get it adapted in a North Indian setting. It would have been much better to let it be though!
