Shahid Kapoor led ‘Deva’ by Rosshan Andrrew’s released in theatres earlier this year in January and despite high anticipations the film not only bombed at the box office but was received underwhelmingly by the critics as well.
‘Deva’ is said to be a remake of Andrrew’s Malayalam film ‘Mumbai Police’ but with a different climax. Unfortunately this changed climax which the makers believed was the film’s strongest piece and would bring praise, instead became the bone of contention for the film. Also, the fact that the film was reduced to hero centric narrative was another major disappointment.
Now that ‘Deva’ is coming to Netflix tomorrow on March 28th, it will be interesting to see if the viewers agree with the experimental new climax or it gets the same bashing as it did on it’s theatrical release.
Moreover, hero led films are supposed to do better in theatres than on OTT. But that didn’t happen for ‘Deva’ despite Kapoor’s praiseworthy performance. For now there seems to be minimal chances of ‘Deva’ redeeming itself on Netflix but then you never know of the audience’s reactions which changes according to the medium through which the content is consumed.
