On September 3rd 2021, Disney‘s highly anticipated live-action adaptation, ‘Cindrella’ dropped on Amazon Prime Video around the globe. While the film lead, Camila Cabello was praised for her comedic chops, most reviewers gave the film mixed reviews, and many others calling it, below average. Normally, after a feature disaster like that, would put any other projects related to it on ice – for at least five or more years. But two weeks ago, Disney announced that they are planning to release a modern reimagining of Cinderella called ‘Sneakerella’, in a few months. After checking out the trailer, we don’t know if this new film will be any better than the 2021 version.
So… ‘Sneakerella‘. Yep. Let’s ignore the name for now. The trailer follows a young man, El who wants to be a sneaker designer, but is currently working as a stock boy in his step-father’s sneaker shop. However, his best friend, Sami recognizes his talent and encourages him to keep working on his dream. One day, while walking on the street, Sami and El meet Kira King, who is “sneaker royalty” (not joking, this is actually from the trailer). After sharing a moment, El and Kira go their separate ways. Later, Sami encourages El to show off his kicks at the Kings Charity event, where sneaker designers around the country will gather. He meets Kira there and they dance together. But when the clock strikes 12, he is forced to return. But, he leaves his shoe on the escalator, in his haste. End trailer.
While we don’t want to judge this movie by this trailer, it does not look like good news, however. The concept is ridiculous and filled with blatant plot holes, while the urban style, gender-bending story does not provide any appeal either. In fact, if YouTube still allowed dislikes to be shown, the trailer for ‘Sneakerella’ will likely be the most disliked video of 2021. As it is, the upcoming Disney movie is being mocked online to ridiculous proportions and we already feel bad for the up and coming actors who are attached to this project. While we do not think Camila Cabello’s ‘Cinderella’ was good, we have a feeling that ‘Sneakerella’ might make the 2021 live-action adaptation feel like it was ‘Shawshank Redemption’.
‘Sneakerella’ is expected to release on February 18th 2022 on Disney+ Hotstar. Check out the trailer for this feature film below:
