Independence movements are a source of unending inspiration that convey tales of resilience and true courage. And while a lot of major motion pictures, as well as TV shows, have brought unheard stories from these rebellions to light time and time again, it seems as though a lot more chronicles remain.
Attempting to bring one such buried tale to the small screen is National Award winning director Nikkhil Advani’s upcoming electrifying series about the Indian freedom struggle ‘Freedom at Midnight’. Streaming on SonyLiv soon, the ensemble cast for the show based on Dominique Lapierre and Larry Collins’ best-selling book of the same name features Scam 1992 famed Chirag Vohra as Mahatma Gandhi, Sidhant Gupta as Jawaharlal Nehru, Ira Dubey as Fatima Jinnah, Aif Zakaria as Muhammad Ali Jinnah, as well as Rajendra Chawla, as Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
Having dabbled in a multitude of genres like action, thriller, comedy, romance, and drama as a director for films like ‘Batla House’, ‘D-Day’, ‘Salaam-E-Ishq’, ‘Patiala House’, and more, ‘Freedom at Midnight’ will be Advani’s first attempt at directing a mainstream TV title in the historical war non-fiction category.
However, Advani’s accomplished slate does include the highly rated biographical drama ‘Rocket Boys’. Which is to say, while ‘Freedom at Midnight’ seems to be Advani’s attempt at traversing uncharted waters, it does not seem to be a vain one. Moreover, with the online buzz that the title has generated, it seems to be on a lot of ‘To Watch’ lists.
