Netflix‘s decision of purchasing prominent gaming studios amazed everyone last year. When it comes to bestowing quality entertainment to subscribers, there is no denying that the world’s top streaming platform has taken a lot of unique steps. But we all know that the gaming world delivers a completely different form of entertainment to people. And this strategy turned out to be one of the “out of the box” decisions the streaming platform has ever taken. But will it help Netflix in staying on top of the global OTT market?
Netflix disclosed that it had bought Boss Fight Entertainment on March 24. The latter is the third game developing company that has been acquired by the streaming service in the last six months. The remaining ones are Night School Studio and Next Games.
This decision of Netflix shows that it wants to improve its viewership. The OTT platform has witnessed a huge drop in the growth of the number of subscribers in the last few months. Especially in North America. It seems clear that it is looking to expand and offer something unique to its subscribers. Plus, this scenario will give it a significant edge over its competitors.
According to a survey by Digital Media Trends, the majority of Gen Z believes that video games are a better form of entertainment as compared to tv series. On the other hand, adults favoured movies and shows in this survey. Maybe that’s why Netflix is dead set on strengthening its streaming content with gaming instalments in present times. Also, this plan may even offer the streaming service a chance to stand out among the rest of the OTT competitors.
Netflix is still the king of the global streaming market despite its recent decline in the number of subscribers. The remaining competitors have a lot to do to just stay in the game. And they should keep a close eye on the streaming service’s game studio acquiring spree.
