Recently, India has become a budding ground for OTT platforms, and it’s not just companies investing in them; the government is also joining the party. The Kerala State government was the first in the race by launching a government-run OTT platform. Now, Meghalaya has joined the party too.
But will these government-backed OTT platforms be a threat to the major OTT players?
First, let’s understand the basic concept.
These state or government-backed OTT platforms will serve as a stage to showcase local talents and help them monetize their content. As the generation evolves and the internet becomes as important as food, shelter, and clothing, this initiative will definitely help people make a living out of it.
These platforms will not be a threat to the OTT giants, as the target audience and product offerings will be different. These regional OTT platforms will be an imitation of YouTube and the long-defunct TikTok, providing exposure to creators.
Now let’s see what the deal actually is.
The Hello Meghalaya platform, launched on Thursday, offers content like movies, music videos, and short films. Filmmakers can receive up to Rs. 5 lakhs per film, with more for acclaimed works. Content creators earn Rs. 18,000 monthly for maximum uploads, with additional funds based on views.
Short video and filmmakers also benefit. The platform aims to engage young talent in productive activities and support economic growth. It will stream key events like state football matches and music festivals to make them accessible statewide.
This initiative is definitely a good step forward for small creators, especially filmmakers who will receive adequate compensation. However, it won’t significantly impact the business of the major OTT giants.
