Will HBOMax’s Ambitious Batman Project Pay Off?

Will HBOMax’s Ambitious Batman Project Pay Off?

Most of you guys may already know, there is another Batman movie coming out next year, with Robert Pattinson set to portray the caped crusader. But what many of you might have missed is the spinoff series which will be following The Batman movie and it will be set in the same universe. The spinoff series which has tentatively been titled as Gotham Central (working title for now), will tie in some of the loose ends of the movie (we think) as well as set up the next two movies in this Batman trilogy which will make up this “Batman-verse”. But will HBOMax’s and Warner Bros. Pictures’ plan of having an extended universe across multiple platforms work? Or will it fail like most of DC’s main extended universe did?

The Snyder-verse is dead (for now). Even if we get an amazing film in the form of the Snyder Cut version of Justice League and somehow get a brilliant “Ayer Cut” version of Suicide Squad, it’s still too late (again, for now). The previous versions of the films, no matter how bad, are now canon and part of the DCEU. With films like Black Adam, The Suicide Squad (sequel to the aforementioned Suicide Squad), The Flash and Aquaman 2 among others, there is no way we can get Snyderverse back in track, atleast not anytime soon.

Since the DCEU is currently not doing all that well in the box office, so Warner bros. need to rethink their plan about an extended, interconnected universe and they need to start with one good movie first. And we think Matt Reeves’ The Batman is the start they are looking for. We believe Warner Bros. Pictures are planning to create another DC universe, but this time, it will be centered around the dark knight (which is not a bad plan). We feel that this is the case because every other movie we previously mentioned was supposed to be part of the old DCEU, except for Matt Reeves’ The Batman.

And in a way, it is perfect. We know from CW’s The Flash TV series that all of the DC universes (movies, TVs, comics, the animated series and even the games apparently) are interconnected and can be accessed through the speed force (which can be accessed by The Flash). So eventually, after Matt Reeves’ vision of the cape crusader has become prominent enough, we will slowly start seeing some DC crossover (we expect). And with the previously mentioned spinoff TV series which follow the cops of Gotham, there will be plenty of opportunities to add easter eggs as well as other characters to join the sequels or even make their own movies. And this project has to work. Because if it doesn’t, Marvel will pretty much take over the Superhero genre for years to come (with the exception of maybe, The Boys), until Disney makes enough money to buy either Warner Bros. or at the very least, the DC characters.

Plus the Batman Universe is rich on its own. We can have multiple Robins for the first time in a live action movie, and hopefully even see Batgirl and Nightwing on the silver screen. But that will most likely only be shown in the sequels because in the upcoming Batman movie, Bruce Wayne has only been a vigilante for a year. Still there is still time, and Warner Bros. Pictures should properly map out a plan so as to get a better integrated DC universe.
