Nowadays, it seems like the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is a new synonym for controversy. There is no denying that HFPA is losing all its credibility real fast these days. The lack of black people representation among its members has gained immense heat in recent times. The traditional award season for Hollywood is back. But people do not know whether this year’s Golden Globes will find a television spot or not.
HFPA’s regular telecast partner, NBC, has already boycotted the 79th edition of Golden Globes because of the same issue. Additionally, several big names in Hollywood have raised their voices regarding the lack of diversity in the HFPA panel. Tom Cruise made the highlights when he returned his Golden Globes to support the matter. Time’s Up was the first group that shed light on this issue right after last year’s GG ceremony.
The executives at NBC have declared that they are ready to telecast the ceremony in 2023 only if HFPA makes some changes in its panel. The latter has replaced 21 members with new faces so far. But HFPA’s bizarre announcement in October this year made things quite complex. Its announcement stated that the organisation would hold the ceremony with or without a telecast partner. Furthermore, no television channel or streaming service has come forward to telecast the event.
It is not the first time HFPA has found itself in a sea of troubles. In 2018, The Mummy fame, Brendan Fraser accused former HFPA president Philip Berk of groping. The former said that the groping incident took place in 2003. He was an emerging Hollywood star back then. Additionally, the Los Angeles Times conducted an investigation this year that revealed that the so-called non-profit organisation pays nearly $1 million annually to all its 87 members. It means that it may lose its tax-exempt status. Various reports have also claimed that many HFPA members have received bribes from the movie executives to improve their chances of getting nominated. Do you remember The Tourist? It had Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp as the leading duo. Yup, that crap received three nominations at 68th GG. On the other hand, a masterpiece like True Grit did not even get a single nomination in that joke event.
With all the things mentioned above, it looks like HFPA will go without a telecast partner this year. It will be a surprise if a television network will come forward to televise the event. After all, we have to consider the present environment of the Hollywood film industry.
