Marvel Studios’ upcoming animated Disney Plus series ‘I Am Groot’ has just announced its streaming date on the OTT platform. The Groot-based series of animated shorts will premiere on the Disney+ and Disney+ Hotstar streaming services on Wednesday, 10th August 2022.
As the name suggests, ‘I Am Groot’ follows the misadventures of the tree-like humanoid character Baby Groot as he navigates through the galaxy where he encounters eccentric new characters which usually get him into some kind of trouble. Vin Diesel has reprised his role as the voice of the titular character. But the precise plot details for the series are being kept under the wraps.
Although ‘I Am Groot’ features the MCU character from the Guardians of the Galaxy film series and comes under the ambit of MCU Phase-4 slate, the question is: Is the show directly related to James Gunn’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ film series? In other words, will ‘I Am Groot’ be a necessary watch before the upcoming GOTG films?
James Gunn, director of the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ movies has clarified that ‘I Am Groot’ will not play a major role in the upcoming GOTG films. Besides, he also revealed that the animated series is also not a part of the canon, thereby implying an absence of a larger connection to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
