To say that James Cameron’s sequel to the visually stunning 2009 sci-fi film ‘Avatar’ is one of the most eagerly anticipated movies in the world, would rather be a gross understatement. ‘Avatar 2’ was initially slated for a theatrical release in the year 2014. However, after a spate of postponements, the sequel’s latest release date was set as 16th December 2022. But will it actually release this year or get delayed again?
Fans can heave a sigh of relief as 20th Century Studios president Steve Asbell has recently revealed (via The Hollywood Reporter) that ‘Avatar 2’ is on track for its 2022 release. On being quizzed about the release of James Cameron’s ‘Avatar 2’ this year, he had said that “Yes. It will. For real. It’s going to blow people away. You’re not ready for what Jim is doing.”
So, this is a fantastic piece of news for cinephiles across the globe who are waiting with bated breath for perhaps James Cameron’s most ambitious film to date. For the unversed, ‘Avatar 2’ is the not only film being made under the ambit of the Avatar franchise. Because three more Avatar sequels are in the works and slated to release with two-year gaps in December 2024, December 2026, and December 2028 respectively.
For ‘Avatar 2’, the parent film’s lead cast members including Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, and Sigourney Weaver are returning for the sequel. While the new additions boast of some big names like Kate Winslet and Vin Diesel, amongst others.
James Cameron’s ‘Avatar 2’ will revolve around former human Jake Sully and his mate Neytiri who are now living together in Pandora. And now, they must leave their home and explore other areas of the place in order to save their planet from a familiar threat with the help of the Na’vi race army.
