Since the past few months, Jio Cinema has rapidly and significantly made its presence felt in the cutthroat world of streaming services in India. After its masterstroke of making the massively popular IPL 2023 cricket tournament available for streaming free of cost and then acquiring premium HBO titles like ‘Succession’ and ‘House of the Dragon’ and other foreign content, other OTT platforms operating in India have started to feel the heat. Moreover, popular films like ‘Bhediya’ and ‘Vikram Vedha’ are also streaming for free on Jio Cinema.
Now, if Jio does one thing on the lines of what Amazon Prime has been doing, then the formidable business entity can seriously affect the fate of other major streaming services in India including Netflix, Disney+ Hotstar, and SonyLIV, etc. And that one potential move by Jio could be providing bundled / combined services to its subscribers.
As you know that besides the recently revamped Jio Cinema OTT platform, brand Jio has a host of other services including their music streaming app JioSaavn, the TV channels streaming service JioTV, the online shopping app JioMart, and the cloud-based backup service JioCloud, etc.
Now, if Jio could somehow bring all the aforementioned services under one umbrella service offering akin to what Amazon Prime does, then it has serious potential of dominating and even disrupting the Indian OTT industry in the future. As of now, Amazon Prime subscribers can concurrently avail benefits of fast and free-delivery shopping, Amazon Prime Video OTT services, and Amazon Reading, among others. So, if Jio decides to offer its already existing services portfolio under a brand-new umbrella name like Amazon Prime, then it can further make a dent on the Indian OTT space.
Moreover, it was in the news recently that Amazon Prime was ostensibly planning to offer mobile phone connectivity to Prime subscribers in the US (you can refer to our earlier article on this). Jio can also offer a similar package to its users. So, in this space too, Jio has an edge over other OTT platforms like Netflix, SonyLIV, Zee5, and others because Jio is the only company which is a major streaming service besides having a massive telecom network. Thus, Jio has many options and potential strategies to dominate the Indian OTT industry. Will Jio follow Amazon Prime’s business model? Well, it remains to be seen which route the business giant will take to outdo rival OTT platforms in the near future. Until now, it’s going to be a waiting game. Stay tuned!
