The Raj Mehta directorial ‘Jug Jugg Jeeyo‘ starring Varun Dhawan, Kiara Advani, Neetu Kapoor and Anil Kapoor in major roles is due release tomorrow. Coming fresh after his 2019 super-hit ‘Good Newwz’, all eyes are on Jug Jugg Jeeyo to revamp the post pandemic box-office jeopardy after Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 did its fair share just recently. Not only is the film important to bring back romantic comedy genre’s lost glory to bollywood, but also for its leading actor Varun Dhawan. Let’s see how.
Varun Dhawan has had a successful career right from his debut year 2012 to 2018 with all his films achieving good success commercially. But things changed in 2018, with the disappointing box office performance of October and Sui Dhaaga. Even though both films under-performed at the box-office, the actor received critical acclaim for his performance in the two films. However, the biggest blow his career came in the year 2019. One of the most awaited biggies of that year, Kalank met disastrous box-office fate. He also met with extremely negative reviews for the film. The actor’s dismal box-office performance continued when Street Dancer 3D flopped, again in the year 2020. Although one could argue covid-19 played a villain there, one couldn’t help but notice that critical reception of the film was bad too. Varun’s Coolie No 1 remake also met disastrous critical reception on Disney+Hotstar in 2020. The actor did not have any theatrical releases in the lead during the year 2021 except a guest performance in ‘Antim: The Final Truth‘.
If we look at that, the actor hasn’t been doing well with respect to films since 2018 and this Raj Mehta directorial is a make or break for him. One could also add that Kiara Advani, his co-star in Jug Jugg Jeeyo herself is on a hit-streak currently and her collaboration with director Raj Mehta turned fruitful in Good Newwz. So all the hopes are pinned on this film for the star’s resurgence commercially and critically.
If early reviews are to go by, the film has struck all the right chords of a massive romantic comedy and family entertainer and might actually bring back Varun Dhawan of the Dulhania phase back. Although far-fetched, the film could also mark resurgence of romantic comedy genre that lost its footing in bollywood long back. Its been almost a decade since we had an original entertaining romantic comedy drama coming out of Bollywood. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani came out in 2013 and Hasee Toh Phase released in 2014. Even the second installment of the Dulhania series came back in 2017. So this film could actually turn out to be a blessing in disguise for not just Varun, but everyone involved in the film.
