Kill has been one of the most exciting films of the year, introducing Indian audiences to a new form of action never seen before. The film is brutal, violent, and is already garnering interest for remakes, including a Hollywood version, which adds a stamp of greatness that Indian audiences will appreciate.
Getting a remake even before hitting theaters sets a high standard for Indian films. However, there is a big question mark. There is a significant possibility that the Hollywood remake won’t be as successful as anticipated—not a mark of pessimism, but a realistic concern.
Kill is associated with Lionsgate and Chad Stahelski, both known for producing massive action hits. But that’s precisely why audiences might overlook this film.
Consider the case of Nobody, featuring Bob Odenkirk, which came out in 2021. It was a solid action film that grossed well at the box office but couldn’t escape comparisons to John Wick. When Lionsgate and Chad Stahelski are attached to a project, they bring not only greatness but also inevitable comparisons to John Wick.
A film like Kill might face the same fate. The basic storyline—a man on a killing spree against an army of invading bandits—may lead to comparisons with Nobody and John Wick, despite differences in the level of action and sequences.
Nobody faced similar criticism despite its distinct style of action.
You can’t really blame the studio or the director, as it’s the fans who draw these comparisons. While the Lionsgate banner will certainly uplift the film, you can still expect questionable reviews from average fans, which might result in lower ratings but will also provide much bigger exposure.
Kill will not be just another John Wick. If the studio can carry the Indian essence (taking a few lessons from Dev Patel’s Monkey Man), it will definitely fight the John Wick comparisons. Fans want to see something new in action, and if they can deliver, Kill can definitely be a major Hollywood success.
