The trailer for Netflix’s ‘Decameron’ is out now. It is a Renaissance period classic written by the Italian poet Boccacio. The book tells the story of a group of 14th century nobles in Florence who secure themselves inside a fort when the common subjects keep dying because of the plague. The nobles, ten in number, tell stories to each other to keep themselves engaged. The one hundred stories are stories of humour, horror, sadness and eroticism.
But from the trailer it seems that comedy has gotten the better of other genres in the stories. The trailer is, of course, hilarious and looks promising. But there is doubt on how the show cam really do justice to the book. Only a few days ago the trailer for ‘One Hundred Years Of Solitude’ from Netflix was released and it seemed to be a near-perfect adaptation to the fans. There is huge anticipation for the Garcia Marquez story coming to Netflix and and fans are happy that it seems accurate and close to the text.
The text of ‘Decameron’ is not as widely read in international circles, and there is a benefit for the makers of the show that this will be the only recent adaptation audiences will get to watch. So, there is huge potential for the series but some people seem to be a bit disappointed in the trailer. Meanwhile others celebrate and welcome it wholeheartedly.
