‘Perusu’, Tamil remake of the internationally acclaimed Sri Lankan film ‘Tentigo’ by Ilango Ram has set its OTT premiere and will be coming to Netflix in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam on 11th April, 2025 after completing the four week theatrical run.
‘Perusu’ is also directed by Ram and stars Vaibhav, Sunil Reddy, Niharika NM, Bala Saravanan, Redin Kingsley and Chandini Tamilarasan among others. The film revolves around the chaotic funeral of an elderly man, whose two sons are dismayed to find his erect penis even after his death. While trying to manage the situation discreetly they are forced to confront their strained bonds.
Despite the original being a festival favourite, earning huge acclaim around the world, this Tamil remake could not weave the same magic on big screen resulting in an underwhelming box office run.
Moreover, even the critics felt that ‘Perusu’ did not live up to the hype of the original and falls short of becoming a brilliant comedy mostly due to its complacency. ‘Perusu’s storyline was criticised for lacking that much needed weight and emotional depth and rather relying more on one-liners and gags.
Some other critics also noted that ‘Perusu’ is a mindless entertainer that’s simple yet effective and despite certain limitations it works. Moreover, the film comes out as a relief at a time when Tamil cinema’s focus is more on high octane action films.
Now the big question is will ‘Perusu’ work on Netflix? High chances are that it might! That’s because the film works around themes of black comedy that is well received by streaming audience who are often looking for a more relaxed watch than the ones giving an adrenaline rush.
Also, the original has been very popular globally so much so that ‘Tentigo’ became the first Sinhalese film to be remade into other languages including Spanish, Italian, English, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam whereas France and Belgium in the future. Such feat creates quite an intrigue for the title amongst the inquisitive OTT viewers always looking for something unique.
