Kerala box-office is helplessly eyeing at the upcoming Malayalam language action film ‘Kaduva’ (translates to Tiger) starring Prithviraj Sukumaran to end its dry spell when it comes to malayalam language movies. This Shaji Kailas directorial is written by Jinu V Abraham and stars Vivek Oberoi and Samyuktha Menon in main roles alongside Prithviraj Sukumaran.
The film is set in late 1990s and revolves around an influential young rubber planter from Mundakayam named Kaduvakunnel Kuruvachan, and his fight with DIG Joseph Chandy IPS that ensue a string of chaos in the lives of both parties. Kaduva is written by Jinu V Abraham and is supposedly a fictionalized version of a true story.
The promotional materials dropped so far including posters and a teaser, takes us back to a very old-school yet relevant commercial blockbuster. The film also sports the very typical flavour of ‘battle of two mighty egoes’ reminiscent of Ayyappanum Koshiyum starring Prithviraj Sukumaran and Biju Menon. However it is yet to be seen if Kaduva will replicate the box-office success of the same.
The Kerala Box-office has been quite way too dry for Malayalam films after the success of Mammootty starrer Bheeshma Parvam (2022). Although there were few unexpected wonders in the likes of Jo&Jo and Jana Gana Mana, an out and out commercial blockbuster is missing from Malayalam movies since April. To add salt to the injury, all the three Malayalam releases of last week, be it Vaashi starring Tovino Thomas and Keerthy Suresh, Suraj Venjaramoodu starrer Heaven or Prakashan Parakatte are moving towards disaster verdict at the box office. The hopes on Kaduva are way too high considering how Prithviraj is coming after the success of Jana Gana Mana with Shaji Kailas, one of the most revered commercial directors from Malayalam Cinema. In fact Shaji Kailas was a game-changing director for commercial Malayalam cinema when he made Commissioner, Narasimham,The King, The Truth etc to name a few.
Kaduva is jointly produced by Supriya Menon of Prithviraj Productions and Listin Stephen of Magic Frames with the latter also distributing the film. Jakes Bejoy composes the background score and original songs of the film.
